Bio Stuff

Lil’Mark began Djing in 1992. He took a shine to the U.S market mainly being pulled towards the house sounds of New Jersey and New York. Mark held a residency at Karanga with his good friend Matthew Styles and they played along side the likes of Jeremy Healey, Danny Rampling and Xpress 2.

Styles and Mark would regularly visit Rene and Bacus (Of the 80’s Bristol Underground scene) to purchase US imports that no shops in Bristol would stock which gave them an upper hand in their selections. Tony Humphries Kiss FM tapes were also exchanged which were a huge influence.

Mark also held a residency at Café Blue in Bristol for two years, it started out life as just a Café, however his contribution to the music policy helped it evolve into one of Bristols biggest clubs in just 18 months, soon attracting the likes of DJ Sneak and Roger Sanchez to the stage.

In 1994 things changed after Mark met Derrick Carter at one of the first SPACE parties hosted by his good friends Kenny Hawkes and Luke Solomon. Mark explains Derrick had a huge influence and impact on his musical direction as he had the ability to mix and blend most genres of house together.

A friendship was forged and in 1997 Mark went and lived in Chicago with Derrick, Chris Nazuka and Tim Schumaker. Mark picked up the basics of production from watching Derrick and Chris in the Red Nail studios and also spent time with Honey Dijon, Dj Sneak, Gemini and many others.

After touring for a couple of months with Carter who was promoting his Cosmic Disco Mixmag compilation plus new material Mark returned home. With this new experience he got straight to work teaming up with Roberto Mello and they created ‘The Detox Twins’.

Their first release ‘Love Shared’ came out on one of the greatest underground house labels of all time MFF. Mark’s remix was greatly received and the release was a regular in the boxes of Dj Sneak and Josh Wink to name but a few. The Original mix picked up by the likes of BBC Radio 1 - which was quite an affair for a debut release thus giving the Label and Artists the recognition it deserved.

Mark’s solo debut ‘Expression’s E.P’ was also well received and came out on the Classic imprint which is undoubtedly another of the greatest house labels, this release made its way into most DJ’s bags and that has been the case ever since, his music is so well respected amongst his peers. Mark is also one of the only artists to have back to back releases on Classic.

Mark has also released under the guise of Phonic Crunch with lifelong friend Joseph Jeffries (AKA Pale People) with a number of releases in early 00’s, including Digital Day which received worldwide support. Phonic Crunch re-entered the Studio in 2018 which led to creation of their label Finger Prince Recordings, with Ibiza based Dj and producer Bart Ricardo.

Mark’s work has been found on respected labels including Jamie Jones Hot Waves, Leftroom Records, Moulton and many more.

He has worked along side Grammy Award winning Luke Solomon on his ‘Little Creatures’ project and also provided Vocals on a project which involved Justin Drake, Matt Tolfrey and Matthew Dear.

His remixes appear alongside artists like Luciano and his music continues to feature in sets by Zip, Villalobos, Farina and Sneak

His singles have been seen on compilations from D.M.C, Ministry of Sound, OM, Mixmag’s M.A.N.D.Y and the Save Fabric compilation.
